Fall is Upon Us Once Again!

Can you believe October is almost here? Time flies when you are having fun! With the crisp, cool air of autumn upon us, many folks are taking advantage of the cooler weather and getting outside as much as they can before winter (and snow) arrives. Take advantage of this cooler weather by starting some fall walking classes or another suitable class format at a local beach or park! Speaking of fun classes to offer with SilverSneakers FLEX^®, we have just recently released the new SilverSneakers EnerChi^TM training. Be sure to check it out and see if any of your locations would like to offer some EnerChi classes. This tai chi-inspired format is really popular and will only grow as more locations and instructors learn about it! You can learn more about the EnerChi training on the Training Tab in the Instructor Resource Center (IRC).

In this issue we will meet Toccara Daniel, the Instructor Spotlight of the Quarter, learn more about Tivity Health’s involvement with combating social isolation in our rural aging population, discover great tips about stress relief to share with your members, and get to know our very own Sabrina Sculley, FLEX Network Liaison, a little better. We will also be sure to go over a few very important housekeeping items.

Instructor Spotlight: Toccara Daniel
Flex Instructor, Oak Park, IL

Toccara Daniel chose to start teaching SilverSneakers FLEX classes because she realized there was more of a need for our valuable seniors to remain active within the community. There are psychological and physiological benefits from physical movement along with social interaction. SilverSneakers classes provide these benefits and she wanted to help. Her goal, as a SilverSneakers FLEX instructor, is to provide a fun, safe, and effective fitness experience. Toccara was able to hold two events at her FLEX locations celebrating her success as a wonderful FLEX instructor. Check out these pics of her participants celebrating her and her hard work!

Q&A with Sabrina Sculley
Flex Network Liaison

Sabrina Sculley has been on the team as a FLEX Network Liaison for almost four years now. We decided to sit down and chat to get to know her a little better.

Question: If you could live anywhere, where would it be?
Sabrina: Somewhere on or near a river in Montana so that I can kayak whenever the urge comes over me.
Question: What is your favorite thing about your career?
Sabrina: I get to work with a wonderful network of instructors who have a passion to make a positive impact in the lives of older adults.
Question: What makes you laugh the most?
Sabrina: My children! They definitely test the waters sometimes, but their adorable personalities are the light of my life.
Question: What is the best gift you have been given?
Sabrina: The unconditional love and support of family. Without that, not much else really seems that important.

FLEX Substitute Policies

With the holidays quickly approaching, you may find that you need to find a substitute to cover classes. Please remember that it is best to find a substitute if you plan to miss class to maintain the routine for the SilverSneakers members. Additionally, for many members, attending SilverSneakers classes is something for them to look forward to that day. We have many resources for you as instructors to use to find FLEX substitutes including the quarterly sub list, the IRC Job Board and access to other instructors via the SilverSneakers Instructor Facebook group. Please refer to the FLEX Sub Process for additional information.

As more individuals learn about the Job Board Tab in the Instructor Resource Center, more and more teaching opportunities are being posted. Be sure to visit the Job Board today to find potential teaching opportunities (both SilverSneakers and FLEX) and substitute teaching opportunities in your area!
